The tumultuous nature of the property market since the first lockdown coupled with the resource issues many firms faced as a result, the increasing responsibilities of the job, the time pressures of working on cases, the greater expectations from clients, etc, all mean conveyancing staff are being put under increased pressure, which can have a negative impact on their mental health and wellbeing.

Often a key issue is that the work of a conveyancer is so interconnected with other professions in terms of trying to get cases completed, that as the individuals at the coal face, it is conveyancing staff who often ‘get it in the neck’ when issues do arise, even if they are beyond their control.

So in recognition of this year’s World Mental Health Day we are encouraging conveyancers across the country to ensure they prioritise their mental health and wellbeing, and for firm owners to ensure mental health needs are at the forefront of their mind when it comes to supporting staff.

For some individuals this may mean setting more rigid boundaries, introducing mindfulness into the daily routine or building a more effective network, but for others, they may require more help and there are a number of organisations specifically targeted at supporting those within our industry including LawCare.

A mental well-being charity for the legal community, LawCare, offers free confidential emotional support to anyone working in law. You can find out more about LawCare here. https://tinyurl.com/bdf2b6cy

Remember however, that if you, or your staff, are having negative feelings, stress or anxiety, and it is becoming overwhelming, it is vitally important to seek the help of a medical professional.
